IS ALL SILK THE SAME?

What Is Silk, Really?

Real silk is a natural protein fibre, spun by the silkworm. Nothing else feels, breathes, or behaves quite like it. But the word “silk” is used very freely in the bedding market today, and a lot of what’s sold under that name was never near a silkworm. Here is how to tell the difference.

The Burn Test

A few threads from the seam, a flame, and the fibre tells you the truth:

  • Real silk burns slowly, smells distinctly like burnt hair, and leaves a brittle black ash that instantly crumbles between your fingers. It stops burning the moment the flame is removed.
  • Plant-based "silks" burn quickly like paper, smell of burning leaves, and leave a soft grey ash. This includes bamboo silk (which is usually rayon or viscose), art silk (rayon), banana silk, lotus silk, soy silk, and cotton-silk blends.
  • Synthetic "silks" melt, drip, and curl rapidly into a hard, un-crushable plastic bead while releasing a harsh chemical smell. This includes anything labeled as silk touch, silky touch, faux silk, imitation silk, or silk alternative.
The Satin Secret

Satin and charmeuse are not fibres. They are weaves, and the weave structure is simply what creates the glossy surface. A satin weave can be executed using silk, polyester, rayon, or nylon. Most of what’s sold in standard retail aisles as “satin” is 100% polyester plastic. Statements like “100% satin” sound like a material claim, but they aren't. The raw fibre is what actually matters to your skin, and the true fibre should always be named plainly on the label.

Real Silk, Under Other Names

Some terms sound unusual but represent genuine silk:

  • Peace silk / ahimsa silk: Real silk, harvested gently after the moth has naturally emerged.
  • Silk noil / raw silk: Real silk, made from shorter fibres with a textured, matte finish.
  • Tussah / wild silk: Real silk gathered from wild silkworms.
  • Habotai: A classic, lightweight silk weave.
  • Charmeuse: Can be real silk, but only if the raw fibre content is explicitly stated.
Reading the Label & Australian Standards

In Australia, household bedding must carry a care label under the mandatory Consumer Goods (Care Labelling) Information Standard. While care steps are legally required, a premium fibre statement is the true mark of an honest maker. Knowing the composition of your product material ensures you know exactly what is coming into contact with your family's skin.

Words that describe how a fabric feels are not the same as words that tell you what it is. Phrases like silky soft, silky smooth, silk feel, silk-like, silk finish, silk style, or silk touch describe a surface feeling, not a fibre.

Be cautious when sourcing bedding online if “silk” is loudly advertised in the product title, but the fine print lists a different synthetic fibre, or if you see the phrase “silk blend” with no clear percentages given.

The Champagne Rule

We all know that for a sparkling wine to be legally called Champagne, it must genuinely come from the Champagne region of France. If it is made anywhere else, it is simply sparkling wine—no matter how beautiful the bubbles are or how luxurious the bottle looks. We believe the word silk deserves that exact same respect.

Just like Champagne, real silk is defined by its true origin and raw chemical purity. That is why we don't hide behind "silky" adjectives. We provide 100% pure Mulberry silk, independently lab-tested and verified under strict ISO protocols right at the source.

Weight Matters: Momme

Silk fabric is measured by weight, known as Momme, rather than thread count. One momme is precisely 4.34 grams per square metre. While bargain alternatives quietly lower their weight to a flimsy 19 momme (about 82.5g/m²), we intentionally selected a dense, luxurious 22 momme, which clocks in at 95.5 grams per square metre. This extra weight provides the perfect everyday balance of rich drape, softness, and the durability needed to withstand regular, gentle laundering.

The Truth About "Grade 6A"

If you have been researching silk pillowcases, you have likely seen the term "Grade 6A" used everywhere. Many brands place this label on their finished products, but we believe in sharing the real story. Grade 6A is the highest official quality rating available, but it is strictly tested on the raw silk yarn based on Chinese national standards (GB/T). It evaluates raw filament strength, evenness, and purity before the fabric is ever made. Once silk yarn is woven into a finished fabric, there is no official "6A" fabric certification. For our pillowcases, we ensure our weavers source raw silk that meets these top-tier filament standards before weaving.

Verified Purity & Chemical Safety

To ensure our pieces deliver a genuine, trusted sleep ritual, our woven fabric is independently analyzed at the source under strict ISO 1833-4:2023 testing methods. Our textile samples yielded a definitive, certified breakdown: 100% Pure Silk.

Beyond pure composition, true luxury requires absolute physical safety. Our fabrics have successfully completed rigorous verification testing and are certified under the globally recognized OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 benchmark. This independently guarantees that every single thread has been comprehensively tested for over 1,000 harmful commercial substances and toxic dyes, proving the textile is entirely safe for direct, prolonged contact with human skin.
